LA Times Staffers Sue Sam Zell

Current and former Los Angeles Times workers are suing the Tribune Company and various head honchos like owner Sam Zell, for allegedly creating a business plan that wrecked the company. The suit, which is available here, said:

Zell and his accessories threaten to destroy the Tribune Company and its assets, which include some of the nation's oldest and best daily newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, and the Baltimore Sun, along with several other great daily newspapers.

Is Zell just doing what needs to be done? Is malice involved? Or is it just good business?

Go.

The last time I talked to my mom she thanked me for finalizing my decision to attend law school. Having other career options amidst a whirl of job losses in journalism definitely relieves her of some parental stress.

Maybe I won't actually be living in my parents' basement when I'm 30

Layoffs at the Tribune have affected a few friends of my family. It makes it really difficult to weigh in on the question of Zell's intentions. I feel like I want to hate him for creating such a malicious plot to single-handedly bring the demise of the Tribune Company. But, at the same time I recognize the reality of the situation. Changes are needed in journalism to help boost the industry back up. Whether or not Zell's plan was the right change, I don't know yet, but kudos to him for trying.
